In 1998, the BJ Homesat Network (a private satellite network for homeschool families originally named the HELP Network) began broadcasting homeschool curriculum and other helpful programs to homes across the USA, Canada and Mexico. HELP at Home was one of those programs. It began as a 30 minute pre-recorded show designed to help and inform homeschool families. It featured a teacher profile, a craft demonstration and some homeschool news. The original concept was Gary Moore's idea. He served as producer and host for those 30 minute shows and Chris Davies was the director and editor. In 2002, after the construction of a new and larger studio at the BJ HomeSat Network and with the ability to broadcast live from it, Chris had the idea of broadcasting the show live allowing for interaction from viewers via live calls and emails. He changed the format of the show to a variety show and included outside guests, music and fun segments. He also extended the length of the show to two hours and moved it to Friday evenings on the network allowing it to serve as a great family activity at the end of a busy week. Gary remained the host of the show and Chris became the producer/director. Initially, Gary was terrified to do live, but with encouragement and coaching from Chris he survived the first show and adapted to the new format very well.
As the show grew in popularity, the content expanded and became more ambitious. Cooking with Chef Schopf, Watch and Win and regular fun segments like Old News, Croc Man and the Nigel and Nigel episodes were introduced. Chris was constantly looking for ways to keep the show fresh and provide an entertaining platform for it's viewers. With this expansion, a number of live remote broadcasts were undertaken, including the shows most ambitious - broadcasting the show live from the Rosen Shingle Hotel in Orlando, Florida during a homeschool convention. This was no small feat considering there was only a crew of 10 and a very limited budget, but it worked and was a huge success.
